Cedar House provides a wide range of publishing services for authors. Available are manuscript consultation, editing and proofing, proposal preparation, self-publishing consultation and publicity and marketing assistance. Our editorial staff is small, but experienced. Each member has an average 25 years of expertise in published writing, editing, public relations and marketing.

You may wish to shop your manuscript around to some of the larger publishing houses, but be advised that the layered structure of the large houses means long delays and, in some cases, no evaluation at all. Read Pat Gundry's comments on acquisitions problems in the publishing establishment for some eye-opening insights.

We build our reputation by establishing ongoing relationships with one author or client at a time. We don’t believe in taking advantage of unsuspecting new authors who only want to pump out mediocre books. See some reasons to avoid POD publishers for hire from Jim Cox of Midwest Book Review. Our focus is in providing information and assistance to new or prospective authors who don't know where to start or who are wary of publishing scams. We can help you avoid many mistakes and save you valuable time and money. We are not a literary agency, but we may be able to recommend agents.

"I am convinced her professional touch is what made the difference between my manuscript disappearing into the black hole of obscurity, and getting the type of serious consideration I think my book deserves."

"Debbie proved to be trustworthy in all aspects of our working relationship."

"Her extensive knowledge of the writing and publishing process made her the perfect mentor and helped make my dream come true."

Guidelines for Manuscript Submission

  • For nonfiction, include contents, the first two chapters and a market analysis. Tell us how this book is different from others and what its intended audience is. We'll tell you if you need more work before we go farther or if we wish to see the entire manuscript.

  • For fiction, include a synopsis, list of characters and the first two chapters. For short fiction (100 manuscript pages or less), you may send the entire story.

  • Short inspirational manuscripts and young children’s books may be sent in their entirety. If you are also an illustrator, send several samples of your work (no originals, please).

  • Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you wish to have materials returned. Manuscripts must be typed or printed on white paper and double-spaced. No staples or clasps of any kind, please.

  • Include a brief discussion of how you intend to be involved with promotion—book signings, school visits, speaking appearances, media interviews—especially for nonfiction.

  • Please be plain and concise and check spelling and grammar.

We will respond within 6-8 weeks.
